How to Measure Sliding Doors for a Perfect Fit

A sliding door can look beautifully proportioned on a drawing, yet a difference of just a few millimetres on-site can affect how it fits, drains and performs. Knowing how to measure sliding doors correctly is therefore about more than recording a width and height. It means understanding the opening, the finished floor level and the particular aluminium system being specified.

Premium aluminium sliding doors are made to order, with refined sightlines and engineered tolerances. That precision is a major part of their appeal, but it also means measurements must be taken carefully and interpreted alongside the design. A clear, well-prepared set of dimensions gives your supplier, builder and installer the information needed to plan a door that feels considered from every angle.

Measure the opening, not the old door

For a replacement project, remove or allow for removal of the existing frame before taking the final dimensions. Measuring the visible glass, moving sash or old frame will not tell you the size of the masonry opening available for the new system.

The key measurement is usually the structural opening: the clear space between the masonry, timber or steelwork that will contain the new frame. In an extension or self-build, this should be measured once the opening is complete, the lintel or steel is in place, and the construction is stable. For existing properties, it may be necessary to expose parts of the reveal to establish what is truly structural and what is merely trim, render or plasterboard.

Do not assume that an opening is perfectly square because it appears so. Brickwork, older extensions and timber structures can all vary. An aluminium sliding door system can accommodate a planned fitting tolerance, but it cannot correct a significantly uneven or undersized opening without appropriate preparation.

What you need before measuring sliding doors

Use a good-quality metal tape measure rather than a fabric tape, and record all figures in millimetres. A laser measure can be useful for an initial check, but a tape is often more reliable at reveals and uneven edges. You will also need a spirit level, a straightedge and somewhere to record measurements clearly.

Before you start, establish where the finished floor level will be. This is especially important when a low or flush threshold is part of the brief. Floor finishes such as tiles, engineered timber, internal screed and external paving can change the effective height available by far more than the tolerance needed for a sliding door frame.

It is also sensible to have the intended configuration in mind. The measurements may be the same for two systems, but the practical requirements differ between a two-panel door, a three-panel door with a central sliding sash, or a multi-track design opening to one side. Sightlines, stacking positions, access routes and drainage all need to work with the building as well as the dimensions.

How to measure sliding doors accurately

Take three width measurements

Measure the clear structural width in three places: across the top, middle and bottom of the opening. Record each measurement, rather than relying on an average.

The smallest width is usually the critical figure because the frame must fit within the tightest point. If there is a noticeable difference between the readings, check whether the reveals are bowed, whether old plaster is affecting the measurement, or whether the opening needs making good before installation. Your supplier can then assess the appropriate allowance for the chosen system.

Take three height measurements

Measure from the intended finished floor level to the underside of the lintel or structural head at the left, centre and right of the opening. Again, retain all three figures.

This is where many otherwise careful projects go wrong. Measuring from an unfinished slab can result in a door that is too tall once flooring is fitted. Equally, overlooking the build-up beneath exterior paving or decking may compromise threshold drainage or leave an awkward step. Mark the finished levels clearly if the flooring and landscaping have not yet been completed.

Check the diagonals for square

Measure from the top left corner of the opening to the bottom right, then from the top right to the bottom left. If the two diagonal measurements differ, the opening is out of square.

A small variation is common and can often be managed within the normal installation tolerance. A larger difference needs attention early, particularly with wide sliding doors where crisp, narrow perimeter gaps make irregularities more visible. Do not try to disguise a seriously out-of-square opening by ordering an altered frame size. The surrounding construction should be corrected so the door can be installed plumb, level and square.

Check the reveals, head and floor

Run a straightedge or long level across the reveals and head. Look for protruding mortar, uneven blockwork, bowed timber, damp-proof membrane laps or plaster that may restrict the frame. Check the floor is level across the full width too, especially at wide openings where a slight fall becomes more noticeable.

Take note of any steelwork, timber posts, oak framing or insulated cavity closers. These details can affect fixing positions, sealing methods and the amount of usable opening. They are as useful to the technical team as the headline width and height.

Allow for the frame, cill and installation gap

The structural opening size is not necessarily the size that will be ordered. Aluminium sliding door frames need a controlled perimeter gap so they can be positioned accurately, fixed securely and sealed correctly. The exact allowance depends on the system, the substrate and the installation method.

The frame may also sit on a cill, support packers or a prepared threshold detail. If a projecting aluminium cill is specified, establish its depth, whether it needs end caps, and how it will interface with the outer leaf, render or cladding. For doors set behind brickwork, consider the depth of the reveal and whether the finished façade will conceal the frame as intended.

This is why it is unwise to deduct a standard amount from an opening and treat the result as a manufacturing size. A reputable supplier will confirm the required deductions for the selected sliding door system and project detail. Bespoke doors should be manufactured from verified order dimensions, not a rough on-site estimate.

Record the details that measurements alone cannot show

A dimensioned sketch is often more valuable than a single pair of figures. Draw the opening from inside and outside, then show the width and height readings, diagonal checks, cill depth and finished floor level. Label which side is internal.

Alongside the drawing, note the desired panel arrangement, which panels should slide and where they should stack when open. State whether the door opens from inside or outside, whether a low threshold is required, and whether there are restrictions such as a radiator, kitchen island, retaining wall or roof overhang nearby.

Photographs of the opening can be equally helpful, particularly where there is unusual masonry, steel, an oak frame or a complex external finish. Include wider images that show the surrounding elevation as well as close-up shots of the cill, head and reveals. This helps identify practical issues before the door reaches site.

Common measuring mistakes to avoid

The most common error is measuring once and assuming the opening is uniform. Three measurements in each direction and two diagonals take little extra time, yet they reveal the issues most likely to delay installation.

Another is overlooking finished floor levels. A flush threshold can create a superb connection between house and garden, but it needs early coordination between the door, internal floor build-up, external levels and drainage. It is not a detail to leave until paving is being laid.

It is also easy to focus solely on the view through the doors and forget how they will be delivered and installed. Large glazed panels are heavy. Check access for handling equipment, turning space, scaffold requirements and whether the opening is sufficiently prepared before delivery. For architect-led schemes and high-specification renovations, these site details protect both the programme and the finished appearance.

When to involve a specialist

Early measurements are ideal for obtaining a budget quotation and developing the opening design. Final dimensions should be checked once the structural work, floor levels and external interfaces are confirmed. That distinction matters: a quotation-stage measurement supports a design decision, while a final survey supports manufacture.
