Start with the room, not the roof lantern

A roof lantern must be supported by a properly designed structural opening. The most successful roof lanterns look as though they belong to the building. On a period home, a lantern can still provide modern performance while using proportions and colour choices that sit more comfortably with the existing architecture.

Consider the relationship with other products in the scheme. Matching the lantern frame to aluminium casement windows, heritage-style doors or large sliding doors can create a cohesive exterior. Internally, the frame should work with the kitchen cabinetry, lighting plan and ceiling details rather than compete with them.
