Casement versus sash windows: the essential difference

A casement window is hinged at the side and opens outward, much like a door. It may be a single opening sash, a pair of opening lights, or a fixed-and-opening arrangement. Its design is familiar, versatile and well suited to a wide range of property styles, from new-build homes to carefully considered extensions.

A sash window traditionally consists of two framed panels that slide vertically within the outer frame. In the classic arrangement, both sashes may move to create an opening at the top, bottom or both. Modern sash systems retain this recognisable appearance while using improved balances, weather seals, locking systems and glazing.

This difference in movement affects more than appearance. It changes ventilation, sightlines, furniture planning, cleaning access and the way the window responds to wind and weather.

For an energy-conscious project, look beyond a headline figure and consider the whole assembly. Sash windows can involve more complex mechanisms and heritage detailing, while expansive casement arrangements may require substantial glazed units and carefully engineered aluminium profiles.

Planning can shape the decision before the budget does. Listed buildings, conservation areas and properties with Article 4 directions can have restrictions on replacement windows. Even where formal consent is not required, matching the established style of the street may be the most sensible route. Early discussion with a designer, architect or glazing specialist can avoid costly revisions later.

It is equally worth considering how each window will be used after installation. Will an outward-opening casement interfere with a terrace? Can a sash be comfortably operated behind furniture? Is there enough access for cleaning? Are trickle vents required, and can they be integrated without undermining the intended appearance? These details are not secondary. Choose sash windows when the elevation depends on traditional vertical proportions, heritage character or an established local vernacular. They can provide the right visual discipline for period renovations while offering the benefits of a modern, precision-engineered aluminium system.

Some properties need both. A traditional front elevation may suit sash windows, while a rear extension benefits from slim aluminium casements, roof glazing and larger doors. Done well, that contrast does not feel inconsistent. It reflects the building's history while allowing the newer spaces to perform as they should.
