A small amount of considered care keeps the finish looking refined and helps seals, drainage channels and moving parts perform as intended.
That distinction matters. Choosing aluminium is not about accepting a lifetime of cleaning and repairs. It is about selecting a precision-engineered system that does not rot, swell, warp or need regular repainting in the way timber can. With the right specification and straightforward upkeep, aluminium frames can retain their appearance and performance for many years.
Are aluminium windows maintenance free in practice?
Aluminium windows are best described as low maintenance rather than maintenance free. Their powder-coated finish is highly durable, colour-stable and designed to withstand changing weather. Unlike painted timber, it does not require routine sanding, staining or recoating to protect the frame itself.
However, the window is more than its frame. It includes glass, gaskets, hinges, handles, locking mechanisms and drainage paths. Each has a role in weather resistance, security and smooth operation. Dust, airborne pollution, salt and garden debris can build up over time, particularly around openings and external sills. A quick clean and occasional inspection prevent minor build-up from becoming an avoidable issue.

Even the best aluminium window can be compromised by poor installation. Correct packing, fixing, sealing and integration with the surrounding wall construction are essential. If water is not directed properly away from the frame, or if sealants are poorly finished, the issue is with the installation detail rather than the aluminium itself.
